Op 13 mei 2022 promoveerde M. Willemsen aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam op haar proefschrift getiteld ‘Vitiligo and melanoma: the fine balance between autoimmunity and immune escape’. Het onderzoek in dit proefschrift werd mogelijk gemaakt door KWF Kankerbestrijding en Stichting Pigmentfonds Nederland. Dit promotieonderzoek werd geleid door prof. dr. R.M. Luiten en prof. dr. M.W. Bekkenk. De belangrijkste bevindingen worden hieronder beschreven.
